After 27 years in print, InStyle magazine is going fully digital.
Print mags have been struggling for some time now, and the pandemic has seen so many publications printing fewer issues since 2020.
"Cosmopolitan revealed that beginning this year it will print eight themed issues each dedicated to a different subject and numbered rather than tied to a specific month. In 2019, it published 12 issues, then 10 in 2020 when the pandemic began, and nine in 2021. Marie Claire, which Hearst sold to Future, is now publishing just two print issues a year, while WSJ., the luxury fashion and culture insert of The Wall Street Journal, cut frequency from 12 issues to eight in 2021 with a renewed focus on digital platforms." states WWD.
This makes my heart hurt. I grew up coveting magazines, I poured over them every month. They gave me hope, inspired me, allowed me access to a world outside of my small, Long Island town. Magazines (like music) were my lifeline. I have saved Vogues', Bazaars' and W's since the 80's and I still rip out pages and paper my cloffice (closet/office) with the amazing images that bring me joy.
I am in awe of digital progress but I live in a print world.
